The Nuts and Bolts of Scoring Apneas and Hypopneas.
Notes from Dr. Norman Blumenstock: Even though this was originally published in 2001 its still provides good basic information. Published on April 7, 2001 Respiratory events are divided into two categories: apneas and hypopneas, in which airflow is substantially or partially reduced Respiratory disturbances during sleep have traditionally been divided into two categories: apneas and hypopneas. Noting the associations between four polysomnographic signal channels allows a distinction to be made between apneas and hypopneas and among different types of apneas and hypopneas. One channel is referred to as an airflow channel, channels #2 and #3 are referred to as …
Partial Sleep Deprivation Linked to Biological Aging in Older Adults
Published on June 11, 2015 A study suggests that one night of partial sleep deprivation promotes biological aging in older adults. Results show that one night of partial sleep deprivation activates gene expression patterns in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) consistent with increasing accumulation of damage that initiates cell cycle arrest and increases susceptibility to senescence. These findings causally link sleep deprivation to the etiology of biological aging, and further supports the hypothesis that sleep deprivation may be associated with elevated disease risk because it promotes molecular processes involved in biological aging. “Our data support the hypothesis that one night …
WHAT SYDNEY LEROUX DOES TO HER NEW HUSBAND IF HE’S SNORING.
By D’Arcy Maine | Mar 16, 2015 Unless you’ve been living in an underground tunnel somewhere with no WiFi signal or cell service, you’re aware that soccer stars Sydney Leroux and Dom Dwyer were recently married. In fact, if you follow either of them on social media, you probably already know more about their relationship than that of people you — GASP — actually know IRL. And just when you thought you knew everything about their lives, Leroux documented her new husband’s annoying sleep habit and maybe her attempt at killing him. So that’s a new development. After having her …

A good night’s sleep is a matter of technicality.
Notes from Dr. Norman BlumenstockTechnology can possible help or hinder a good night’s sleep. Technology is a double-edged sword when it comes to sleep. It’s been proven that one should shut off the “screens” — TV, computer, smartphones and beyond — well before hitting the sack, but sometimes, those future-forward devices hold the ticket to getting a good night’s rest. Sleep-related apps IQ ALARM: Wakes people with an IQ test as an alarm; $.99 SLEEP CYCLE ALARM CLOCK: Tracks sleeping habits and quality, and awakens people with soothing tones; $.99 SLEEP: Sends people to sleep with soothing sounds, lullabies and …
The Comparison of CPAP and OA in Treatment of Patients with OSA
Li W, Xiao L, Hu J. Respir Care. 2013 Jan 3 A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to compare the outcomes of oral appliances (OA) with those of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Relevant studies were retrieved from the following electronic databases up to and including September of 2012: MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, and Central Register of Controlled Trials. The main variables were epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), health-related quality of life, cognitive performance, blood pressure, apnea and hypopnea index (AHI), arousal Index (AI), minimum saturation (Min SaO2), rapid eye movement sleep, …
Who can be affected by Sleep Apnea?
People that are most likely to develop sleep apnea are the ones that are overweight and/or snore loudly. Any abnormality in the nose, throat or other parts of the upper airway can contribute to the condition as well as high blood pressure. Although sleep apnea affects more middle-aged men, one out of 50 middle-aged women suffers from sleep apnea. According to the National Sleep Foundation, studies show that people with moderate-to-severe sleep apnea are three to four times more likely to have a stroke. Approximately 50 percent of those with sleep apnea have high blood pressure and are at risk for a …
Sleep Apnea Treatment May Lower Heart Risks
Study: CPAP Can Lower Many Risk Factors for Heart Disease, StrokeBy Salynn BoylesWebMD Health NewsDec. 15, 2011 — In addition to improving sleep, an effective treatment for sleep apnea can also improve blood pressure and other risk factors for heart attack, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, new research shows. Continuous positive airway pressure therapy, or CPAP, helps patients with sleep apnea breathe better during sleep by pushing air into the nose through a mask to keep airways open. The treatment has been shown to improve daytime sleepiness and reduce blood pressure, but its impact on heart disease, stroke, and diabetes …
