Americans don’t sleep enough, and it’s costing us $411 billion.
New research shows just how much our lack of proper sleep hurts the global and domestic economy. By Marco Hafner and Wendy M. Troxel November 30 Myriad business executives and heads of state have said they get by on little to no sleep. President Obama told Vanity Fair in 2012 that he didn’t shut off the lights at the White House until 1 a.m. and rose each morning before 6. Internet pioneer Vint Cerf made his thoughts on the topic clear: “Sleep is a waste of time.” And President-elect Donald Trump, who wrote in his 2004 book “Think Like a …
The Army has a sleep problem. Here’s how to fix it.
By: Maj. Jeff Jager and Aaron Kennedy, November 20, 2016 Editor’s note: The following is an opinion piece. The writers are not employed by Military Times and the views expressed here do not necessarily represent those of Military Times or its editorial staff. The use of alcohol is known to degrade mental capacity and impair decision-making. The military prohibits its use during duty hours for common-sense reasons, and does the same with other substances that can degrade readiness. But when it comes to other actions that can do similar damage, or worse, we promote them with reverence, pretending …
Do you have sleep apnea? Lack of rest could be making you fat.
Research shows that sufficient sleep is as important as diet and exercise for weight loss. How a Sleepless Night Affects Your Ability to Focus.
By Sara G. Miller, Staff Writer | April 3, 2016 09:04pm ET NEW YORK — A sleepless night may affect your ability to filter out information, a new study finds. In the study, the researchers confirmed that sleep deprivation can impair what’s known as “selective attention,” or the ability to focus on specific information when other things are occurring at the same time. A classic example of a setting that requires your selective attention is a cocktail party, said Eve Wiggins, a former student at Willamette University in Oregon and the lead researcher on the study. Selective attention is the …
Study On Sleep Quality For Astronauts Led By NASA.
OCT 4, 2016 BY JOSE BUTTNER Being out in space in not an easy task, as daily routine can get at least different, if not entirely complicated. This is why NASA decided to study sleep quality as one of the important features of spending time in space. Researchers observed the effects of sleep deprivation and point out the importance of good sleep for space explorers. NASA scientists studied the case of Mir, a Russian space station. The spacecraft functioned for fifteen years (1986-2001), and for almost twelve years it has been inhabited. Vasily Tsibliyev was one of the astronauts …
Poor Sleep May Impair the Ability to Feel Empathy.

Lead author Veronica Guadagni, M.Sc., a doctoral candidate at NeuroLab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary, sums up the main finding this way: “If individuals describe their quality …
Not sleeping well? It’s no wonder you can’t remember anything…
Loss of a single night’s sleep is enough to block your brain’s natural reset mechanism. Wed, Aug 24, 2016, 12:04 Updated: Wed, Aug 24, 2016, 12:05 Ian Sample For Jules Verne it was the friend who keeps us waiting. For Edgar Allan Poeso many little slices of death. But though the reason we spend a third of our lives asleep has so far resisted scientific explanation, research into the impact of sleepless nights on brain function has shed new light on the mystery – and also offered intriguing clues to potential new treatments for depression. In a study published …
Drowsy driving and car crashes: How night-shift work contributes to traffic dangers.
Last updated: June 28, 2016 Drowsy driving has caused or contributed to hundreds of thousands of motor vehicle crashes and thousands of deaths in recent years. Estimates of drowsy driving-related accidents, injuries and deaths vary, however. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), sleep-deprived and fatigued drivers caused 846 deaths in 2014. The NHTSA reports that, on average, an estimated 83,000 crashes a year were blamed on sleepy drivers between 2005 and 2009. A report from the Massachusetts Special Commission on Drowsy Driving suggests that the problem is much worse. The widely-publicized 2009 report, “Asleep at the Wheel,” estimates that …

A recent study shows most LEOs are working over 1,000 hours of overtime each year. What are the effects of fatigue, both on and off the job? Jul 20, 2016 By Megan Wells, PoliceOne Contributor In 1991, The National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research listened to testimony from officers who described terrible work schedules, high stress, and overwhelming fatigue as hallmarks of their work environment. The testimony was powerful, but the lack of scientific data to support the officers’ statements meant the Commission was unable to determine the extent of police fatigue. Scientific data on sleep deprivation within law enforcement …
